In its early years, A. Burslem & Son worked on many fine sandstone houses and churches across Kent and East Sussex.

After the First World War, Burslem helped fulfil the great need for memorials at home and abroad, hand carving and engraving tens of thousands of individual memorials in Portland Stone.

Today, Burslem continues to commission, create and restore memorials for churchyards, cemeteries, war memorials, and public monuments. We combine traditional craftsmanship with modern methods where appropriate, continuing to maintain our high quality and personal service.

We are an independent artisan stonemasonry company with a wide range of in-house skills.

Design, stone selection, carving, lettering, permits, installation and aftercare are managed by our own team. From our workshop and showroom, we design and craft memorials with care, knowledge and continuity, working collaboratively with you through every stage.

At Burslem, you deal directly with experienced memorial masons and professionals who can help you make informed choices about stone, lettering, bespoke carving, design and long-term care.

We also have extensive knowledge of churchyards and cemeteries across Kent, Sussex, Surrey and the wider South East. We can guide you through the relevant rules, applications and approvals, and manage the process on your behalf.

You can visit our showroom and see memorials in progress — carved by hand or shaped using modern CNC methods, depending on the design. Nothing is forgotten.

We work with a full range of memorial quality stones, including limestone, sandstone, slate and granite, as well as traditional materials suited to churchyards and cemeteries.

Our in-house carving and lettering services include traditional hand cutting, CNC (Computer Numerical Control) cutting and sandblasting.

We keep many stones in stock and profile them to your specific requirements in our workshop.

We are well placed to advise on future inscriptions, maintenance and restoration. Families often return to us years later because continuity matters.
